Are Agile Methods and Enterprise Architecture Compatible? Yes, with Effort
Agile methods (AM) and enterprise architecture (EA) are emerging disciplines 1 for effectively planning and developing computing systems. Many books and papers are devoted to each, describing their principles, processes, artifacts, and pitfalls. In practice, however, AM and EA seem to be disjointed: they use different languages; they describe different concepts; they have different roles in the software development lifecycle; and they are usually the domains of distinctly different groups within the IT organization. AM and EA also seem to be incompatible: they have different scopes; they have different perspectives on change and stability; and they have different priorities for documentation (partial versus complete delivery) and testing.
