Niels Bjorn Andersen

Cutter Consortium Fellow Niels Bjorn-Andersen is a Professor Emeritus at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), where he has served as both Director of the Executive MBA program and Center for E-Business and Director of the Center for Enterprise Systems.

Mr. Bjorn-Andersen's expertise spans all areas of IT. His current research focus is on the role of IT in shaping future organizations, inter-organizational systems, IT management, the future of ERP systems, and IT in mergers and acquisitions. IT strategy is a key area of expertise, but he is also a thought leader in outsourcing, business process reengineering, governance, M&As, requirements analysis, cost-benefit assessments, and managing the IT resource.

Professor Bjorn-Andersen has helped governments and government agencies establish national IT strategies in countries such as: Denmark, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Sweden, and Tanzania. Mr. Bjørn-Andersen has also consulted for many companies, including the largest Danish publishing house, a leading bank in Europe, and the largest Danish hospital. Challenges he has helped solve include identifying IT requirements, resolving conflicts between business and IT, establishing service-level contracts, managing issues related to e-commerce, and performing organizational implementation of information systems. Mr. Bjorn-Andersen has carried out projects for more than 10 EU institutions and directorates, including DG TAXUD, DG Enterprise, and DG Research. He has also worked with the Trade and Timber Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in establishing trade facilitation.

In his long career at CBS, Mr. Bjorn-Andersen has been a visiting researcher and/or professor at Manchester Business School, Université IX Dauphine, University of California-Irvine, Australian Graduate School of Business at the University of New South Wales, and the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. He has given more than 50 high-level presentations to company boards, directors, and IT managers in various industries, public sector institutions, IT vendor organizations, and consulting companies. He has also co-taught an executive program on IT issues in relation to the supply chain and e-business. Mr. Bjørn-Andersen has carried out more than 40 major research projects within the areas of e-commerce/e-business, IS, ERP systems, e-customs systems, and IT governance.

Mr. Bjorn-Andersen has been the leader or co-leader in more than 30 larger research projects including more recently the € 5.9 million ITAIDE project with among others IBM and SAP, and the € 4,0 3gERP project together with Microsoft. Much of his recent research has been funded by the EU (Esprit, IST); Danish research managencies, including the Advanced Technology Foundation; and Nordic research programs, such as the Nordic Innovation Council.

Mr. Bjorn-Andersen is the author of 25 books, more than 50 international journal articles/book chapters, and more than 100 other publications. He has served on the boards of several organizations, including Schou Management Consultants, Group Vision Nordic, IMS Nordic, E-handelsfonden, and the Danish IT Association. He has also served on the Strategic Advisory Board for the European Business Award for outstanding business performance in Europe.

Niels Bjorn-Andersen has received several academic awards, including the AIS-LEO Award for Exceptional Lifetime Achievement in Information Systems, the Tietgen Gold Medal, the IFIP Outstanding Service Award, the ICIS Appreciation Award, and the AIS Fellow Award. Mr. Bjorn-Andersen was knighted by the Queen of Denmark in 2003. He holds a master's of science degree in organizational behavior and a PhD in decision support systems using IT, both from CBS.
