A Disturbance in the Force

Ed Yourdon
A DISTURBANCE IN THE FORCE by Ed Yourdon

One of my favorite scenes from the old Star Wars movie was Obi-Wan Kenobi's sixth-sense recognition that one of the rebel planets has been completely obliterated by Darth Vader's sinister "death star." With profound sorrow and sadness,

Voluntary Overtime

Cutter Consortium, Cutter Consortium

A recent study from Cutter Consortium's e-Project Management Advisory Service looked at how much voluntary overtime developers were working. It found that companies that had developers working more than 10 hours per week in voluntary overtime suffered in a number of areas when compared to companies that did not have developers working more than 10 hours per week.

Recalling the Lessons from Y2K

Ed Yourdon

I've been rather amused by the number of Y2K-related e-mail messages I've received since 11 September -- though I dearly wish that the events that prompted those messages had never occurred.

IT Professionals Skeptical About Computing Utility Model

Robert Austin
In a recent Cutter Business Technology Council Opinion, I wrote the following:

"Software functionality and other services traditionally provided by internal IT departments will be increasingly delivered ‘over the 'Net’ via supply chains composed of multiple external service providers.

Corporate Use of ASPs for CRM

Curt Hall
Most of the attention pertaining to application service providers (ASPs) has been focused on companies using them to outsource their transaction processing applications and services (Web hosting, human resources, payroll, processing, etc.). Very little discussion has taken place regarding the extent to which companies are embracing the ASP model for outsourcing their customer relationship management (CRM) operations.

Instant Messaging: Humanizing the Web

Ken Orr
Without a great deal of fanfare, instant messaging (IM) has become a major interest area for a good many companies. Like so many technologies, it slipped under the corporate radar as part of the Internet, disguised as a way to let teenagers and retired people talk to each other. Somewhere along the line, it became obvious that millions of people were using IM to send billions of messages each day.

The New Mobile Workforce

Cutter Consortium
Recently, members of the Cutter Research Business Technology Trends Group (a focus group of IT managers) were asked to complete a study on the future of their mobile workforces. For this study, mobile professionals were defined as workers who are trying to access corporate information away from a physical corporate location.

This article looks at the benefits offered by mobile professionals, the devices that will be most used by mobile professionals, and the steps to take to ensure the security of these devices.
