For Richer or For Poorer: How Should People Express Risk Preferences?

The month of June is the traditional month of weddings. Few decisions carry more personal risk than the decision to marry. A standard part of the wedding vows is the admonition "Do you take this man/woman for richer or for poorer..." Saying "I do" acknowledges an acceptance of the opportunity and risk as part of entering into the marriage. But how would one assess the opportunity and risk?
