The Internet of Things (IoT) is already having a big impact on the transportation industry. Probably nowhere is this being felt more than with the railroads. I know of a number of projects under way utilizing sensors, analytics, and mobile technologies to optimize rail operations by collecting and analyzing data to determine real-time vehicle location and operating factors (e.g., average acceleration, speed, idle times, number of stops), and to assess KPIs on equipment wear and roadbed conditions.

Neural networks and other ML model development typically use large amounts of data for training and testing purposes. Because much of this data is historical, there is the risk that the AI models could learn existing prejudices pertaining to gender, race, age, sexual orientation, and other biases. This Advisor explores how the Data & Trust Alliance consortium created an initiative to help end-user organizations evaluate vendors offering AI-based solutions according to their ability to detect, mitigate, and monitor algorithmic bias over the lifecycle of their products.

Mobile, wearable devices support noninvasive, biometric monitoring. They are generating a wealth of data detailing important indicators of the user’s health, ranging from heart rate, respiration, and temperature to perspiration, gait, blood sugar levels, balance, grip, and more. Incorporation of data from sensor-enabled devices with other health and medical information adds a real-time capability to healthcare that has been lacking in all but the more complex medical device monitoring applications to date.
