Most enterprise architects have heard of the Zachman Framework. Indeed, many know that John Zachman first developed his eponymous framework in the 1980s and are familiar with its iconic graphic. Still, it truly astonishes me that some architects know very little about Zachman, or his framework. Upon doing my research for this Executive Update, I was amazed to learn that there really isn’t a good summary of the contributions that Zachman’s work has made to enterprise architecture (EA). So … here is my attempt to record the importance of the Zachman Framework.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a bold global agenda helping the world move beyond traditional indicators such as GDP growth and per capita income to a broader set of objectives that include well-being, environmental sustainability, and social fairness. In this Executive Update, we describe the individual and organizational benefits of contributing to the SDGs as well as how organizations can leverage business architecture to achieve these goals.

This Executive Update draws from the lessons of the Boeing MAX groundings to illustrate the importance of selecting, monitoring, and acting upon risk indicators to preemptively manage risk, as well as providing opportunities to reduce total cost of risk, improve financial performance, and assure stakeholders that risk is being addressed on a controlled and informed basis.

Enterprise-grade data warehouse (DW) and business intelligence (BI) projects are still perceived as "heavy" and believed to be successful only by attacking them with waterfall-style software development processes. While there are specific DW/BI endeavors that project teams can safely execute as waterfall, most can be successfully transformed into Agile projects. This Executive Report shares experiences gained while applying an Agile approach to a complex BI project.

When asking a typical IT manager about a single area where an enterprise architecture (EA) effort should be able to prove its value, probably the most expected answer would be "giving support to projects being run." It is not my ambition here to present the whole scope of possibilities in which EA could support running projects but rather to focus on the refactoring needs concept introduced in Part of this series. Recall that Part II presented refactoring needs in the context of an actual case study in which I worked. Here in Part III, I continue with that case and get into more details about how the refactoring needs built on an EA could support and synergize ongoing software development projects.

Starting from a data warehouse just makes sense. Of course, the architectural thinking and technology offer valuable intellectual capital to IT. But the real value comes from the decades of experience in information/data governance and management, as well as the interpersonal and organizational skills that DW implementers have gathered. As you will see from the articles in this issue, the contributors are on the same path.
