Dr. Barry Devlin is a Cutter Expert, a member of Arthur D. Little's AMP open consulting network, and an expert in all aspects of data architecture, including data warehousing, data preparation, analytics, and information management. He is dedicated to moving business beyond mere intelligence toward real insight and innovation, complementing technological acumen from informational, operational, and collaborative fields with a deep focus on human, organizational, and management growth. Dr. Devlin provides clients with the cross-disciplinary view needed to make the leap to new and expanded architectures describing people, process, and information.

With today’s emphasis on data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and the blending of the operational and informational worlds, Dr. Devlin is creating new methods and approaches to extend data analytics into true business insight. Based on a blend of new technology, along with insight into management and human factors, these methods will provide sustained business value by extending and modernizing existing business intelligence (BI) infrastructures.

As an IT and management consultant, Dr. Devlin has advised and guided BI and big data strategies and implementations in a wide range of business areas over the past 25 years. Clients include major banks, insurance companies, and retailers throughout Europe, the US, and South Africa. His particular skills are in the initiation and oversight of major information- and knowledge-led projects that catalyze and require significant human and organizational change. Moreover, Dr. Devlin has extensive experience in the market positioning and strategic architecture of IT tools, especially in the areas of decision-making support, data architecture, and solutions based on blended internal and external data.

Dr. Devlin is a founder of the data warehousing industry, having published the first architectural paper on the topic in IBM Systems Journal in 1988, and is among the foremost authorities on BI and data warehousing. Dr. Devlin is a widely respected analyst, consultant, lecturer, and author of the seminal book Data Warehouse: From Architecture to Implementation. His most recent book is Business unIntelligence: Insight and Innovation Beyond Analytics and Big Data. Dr. Devlin has also written white papers and presented webinars for leading data companies, including Cloudera, Teradata, and IBM, as well as for smaller or emergent companies like CortexAG, Denodo, TimeXtender, WhereScape, and Yellowfin. In addition, he is a regular contributor to the industry through blogs, journal articles, and Twitter. With a PhD in physical chemistry, Dr. Devlin has over three decades of IT experience.
