When the telephone was first introduced in the latter part of the 19th century, society wasn't quite sure what to do with it. Indeed, its inventor wasn't terribly sure either: Alexander Graham Bell went from city to city, giving lectures on the many wonderful applications for which the telephone would be suitable.
