Introduction

For most of 1996, the hottest topic in the computer field was the Java language introduced by Sun Microsystems. One has to wonder what would have happened if the U.S. Defense Department had managed to garner as much publicity a decade ago when Ada was introduced, or what might have happened if Smalltalk or OO-COBOL had received the same degree of media attention.
