Introduction

About a year ago, I began to hear the term "death march" applied to software projects often enough to begin paying close attention. The concept isn't a new one, although my colleague (and American Programmer Editorial Board member) Capers Jones reminds me that in the military context, it usually has a somewhat different meaning.
