INTRODUCTION

We are constantly reminded of the importance of distributed computing in today's business environment. I'm writing this introduction while visiting Rome on a business trip; it will be sent to our managing editor, Karen Pasley, for editing at her office in Florida; and from there it will be transmitted to the publisher's headquarters in Boston.
