Software Process Improvement: Is That What We All Should Be Doing -- Again?

It should be evident by now, after some four decades of "software process improvements," that such efforts have failed to keep up with the hardware technology. While hardware has made and continues to make exponential improvements in capacity, performance, and cost, software improvements are on a linear path at best.
