COMPILER BACKGROUND

Those involved in "the great COBOL debate" might worry that my affiliation with The COBOL Foundation makes me hopelessly biased. And some members of the current generation of Java, C++, and Visual Basic programmers may wonder whether my background provides me with any credentials for commenting about programming languages.
